Zirconia is a polycrystalline oxide ceramic containing zero silica glass. Because of this, hydrofluoric acid etching and silane coupling agents—the gold standard for lithium disilicate (e.max)—have zero chemical effect on zirconia. To prevent debonding and achieve a long-lasting chemical bond, clinicians must follow a specific chemical protocol tailored to zirconia's surface properties.

1. The Saliva Trap: Why Clean-Up Matters Most
During try-in, the internal fitting surface of your zirconia crown comes into contact with saliva. Saliva contains phosphate ions, which immediately bind to the oxide sites on the zirconia surface.
If these phosphate ions remain on the zirconia during seating, they block the binding sites needed for your MDP primer or resin cement to form a chemical bond. Simply rinsing with water, blowing air, or using phosphoric acid gel will not remove them—in fact, phosphoric acid adds more phosphate ions, permanently contaminating the surface.
Correct Saliva Decontamination
- Do NOT use Phosphoric Acid: Applying etch to the inside of a zirconia crown inactivates the bonding surface.
- Use an Alkaline Cleaner: Use a specialized zirconia cleaner (such as Ivoclean or ZirClean) for 20 seconds, then rinse thoroughly with water and air dry.
- Alternative (Re-Sandblasting): If an alkaline cleaner is unavailable, gently micro-air abrade the intaglio surface again at the chairside using 50 µm aluminum oxide at 1.5 to 2 bar.
2. The Role of MDP Primers: Chemical Fusion
The secret to a true chemical bond with zirconia is the 10-MDP molecule (10-Methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate).
The phosphate head group of the MDP monomer forms a extremely stable ionic chemical bond directly with the zirconium oxide surface, while the methacrylate group bonds with your resin cement matrix.

Option A: Conventional RMGI Cement
- When to use: Retentive preparations (axial wall height 4 mm or greater, convergence angle between 6 and 10 degrees).
- Recommended cements: Resin-Modified Glass Ionomer (RMGI) like RelyX Luting Plus or GC Fuji PLUS.
- Advantage: Fast, forgiving, easy moisture control, and simple cleanup.
Option B: Self-Adhesive or Adhesive Resin Cement

- Recommended cements: MDP-containing cements like Panavia V5, RelyX Universal, or Multilink Automix.
