Lithium Disilicate vs. Zirconia Veneers: Anterior Selection Guide
Choosing between lithium disilicate (like e.max) and high-translucency zirconia for front-tooth veneers usually comes down to two main questions: How much tooth structure do you want to remove? and What color is the tooth underneath?
Both materials offer fantastic durability, but picking the wrong one can force you to prep more than necessary or leave you struggling to hide a discolored tooth.
Here is a practical guide to help you choose the right material for every smile design.

Preparation Depth: Conservative vs. Traditional
Preserving natural enamel is the best way to ensure a long-lasting bond. However, the material you choose dictates how thin you can safely go.
-
High-Translucency Zirconia (0.3–0.5 mm): Modern high-translucency zirconia is extremely strong, even when thin. This allows for ultra-conservative preps—and in some cases, minimal-prep or no-prep veneers—down to just 0.3 mm.
-
Lithium Disilicate (0.7–1.0 mm): Lithium disilicate needs a bit more bulk to maintain its strength and deliver its signature lifelike depth. Expect a minimum facial reduction of 0.7 mm and up to 1.0–1.5 mm at the incisal edge.

Shade Masking: Hiding Dark Stumps
If you are treating a dark, discolored, or endodontically treated tooth, the way light passes through the ceramic becomes your biggest challenge.
-
Lithium Disilicate: Excellent at masking dark preparations. By choosing a more opaque ingot (like MO or HO), you can block out underlying discoloration—as long as you have enough prep depth to layer aesthetic porcelain over the top.
-
High-Translucency Zirconia: While ultra-thin zirconia is great for conservative preps, high-translucency versions can let dark stump colors show through. If the natural tooth is severely discolored, you will need an opaque cement or a less translucent core to avoid a greyish final look.

Bonding Cheat Sheet
Getting a predictable bond requires a different approach for each material:
Lithium Disilicate
-
Etch the inside of the veneer with hydrofluoric acid for 20 seconds.
-
Rinse, dry, and apply a silane coupling agent.
-
Seat with a light-cure resin veneer cement.
High-Translucency Zirconia
-
Lightly sandblast the internal surface with aluminum oxide. (Never use hydrofluoric acid).
-
Clean with a dedicated zirconia cleaner. (Avoid phosphoric acid gel, which ruins the bond).
-
Apply an MDP-based ceramic primer and seat with resin cement.
